Plot summary
Robert Cole cuts film in Los Angeles, where he and his colleague Jay work on a cheesy science fiction project. Off the job he is irrationally jealous and self-centered, and he has long been breaking up with Mary Harvard, a bank employee, then reconciling with her, while she lets his disruptive antics pass. One evening he tells Mary he still loves her but calls their relationship a no-win situation, presumes she has cheated, and ends it. Robert drives to the editing room, and Jay tells him the decision was correct. He stays distressed, calls Mary from home, gets no answer, and then calls Ellen, whom he met at a wrap party and whose appearance he cannot recall, and arranges to see her the next night.
