Plot summary
Dory lives on the Great Barrier Reef as Marlin and Nemo's next-door neighbor. One day she remembers that her parents, Jenny and Charlie, lived at the Jewel of Morro Bay, California, and she sets off with Marlin and Nemo to find them. Riding the California Current with the sea turtle Crush, the three reach California, where Dory searches the wreck of a sunken container ship and wakes a giant squid. She goes for help and is captured by staff from the Marine Life Institute, who quarantine her and tag her for transfer to a Cleveland aquarium. There she meets Hank, a seven-limbed octopus who is afraid of being returned to the sea. He offers to help her find her parents if she gives him her tag.

- Before Pixar made Finding Dory, Disney planned a Finding Nemo sequel on its own through Circle Seven Animation; the studio was shut down after Disney acquired Pixar in 2006. The unmade script, uploaded to the Raindance Film Festival website, introduced Nemo's long-lost twin brother Remy and had Marlin caught and needing rescue.
- Pixar executives revised the film's ending after watching Blackfish, a 2013 documentary about the dangers of keeping orcas in captivity. Some characters were originally going to end up in a SeaWorld-like marine park, but the rewrite gave them an option to leave.
- Hayden Rolence took over as the voice of Nemo from Alexander Gould, whose voice had deepened since the first film; Gould still appeared in the sequel as a minor character.
- To make the film's light look more realistic, Pixar re-engineered its RenderMan software, one of the larger changes to the program in 25 years.
- Conservationists warned Finding Dory could lead uninformed customers to buy regal blue tang fish, Dory's species, for home aquariums, since the fish cannot be bred in captivity and have to be caught in the wild.
- In just 30 days the film overtook Shrek 2 ($441.2 million) to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, breaking a record Shrek 2 had held for 12 years.
