Plot summary
In 1968, five-year-old John Dolittle can hear what animals say, which worries his father, Archer, enough to call a priest; after the dog is sent away, John stops listening and forgets the talent. Thirty years on he is a surgeon in San Francisco, married to Lisa, with two daughters, the teenage Charisse and Maya, who keeps a guinea pig named Rodney and a swan egg she hopes will hatch. Calloway's medical company wants to buy John's practice; his colleague Mark Weller backs the deal and Gene Reiss questions it. With his family away on vacation, John nearly hits a dog on the road, and Rodney begins talking to him.
