Plot summary
Abel Morales, an immigrant, owns Standard, a heating oil distribution company he bought from his father-in-law and runs with his wife Anna. He has put down a million dollars on a two and a half million dollar fuel oil terminal on the East River, bought from a group led by Joseph Mendelsohn, and he has thirty days to pay the rest. Drivers have been beaten and trucks hijacked, and someone is using scare tactics against the business. Assistant District Attorney Lawrence is investigating price fixing and tax evasion in the heating oil trade, and the company's older books could be examined. Anna urges him to answer the attacks in kind, while Abel wants to hold to his own rules.
