Plot summary
Just out of high school in Los Angeles, Jennifer, who goes by J, wears only black clothes, piercings and dyed hair, and feels rejected at home, where her mother has little to say to her. She hunts for work and keeps pestering a clothing store in the Century City Mall until Randall Harris, its forty-nine-year-old owner, takes her on for a trial in the stockroom. J asks if she may call him R, and he agrees. When there is nothing left to do in the stockroom, she drifts to the sales floor and serves customers; Randall buys her a suitable outfit and promotes her to saleswoman. Neither of them has anyone close to confide in.

- Leelee Sobieski's character Jennifer has facial and cartilage piercings but no pierced earlobes, and neither did Sobieski, who did not have hers done until 2006. For the part she had both nostrils, both eyebrows, her lower lip, her navel and the cartilage of both ears pierced, then let them close up, keeping the jewelry as a souvenir.
- In the film's DVD commentary, director Christine Lahti said Albert Brooks campaigned vigorously for the role of Randall, and that although she was initially doubtful he could handle the heavy dramatic aspects of the character, she was won over at their first meeting.
- When Sobieski was considered for the part of "J", Lahti was initially skeptical that "such a beautiful face" could capture the feeling and look of isolation the character needed, but she changed her mind after meeting her.
