Plot summary
Polly Parish works in the millinery department of J.B. Merlin & Son's department store. The manager calls her in and dismisses her because her counter sells too many hats, and the returns burden the accounting office. Walking home and wondering how to make ends meet, she finds an abandoned baby on a step and lifts it to comfort it. A woman opens the door behind her and ushers her inside, and the orphanage staff refuse to believe the child is not hers. When Polly says she has just lost her job at the store, the head of the orphanage intervenes with the charitable Merlins, and the firm hires her back. Dan Merlin, the owner's son, tells her that she will earn ten dollars more a week and that a gift will arrive at her apartment that night.

- During production, director Norman Taurog was in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Very little was known about the illness at the time, so Debbie Reynolds and the rest of the cast and crew "just coped with" his unexplained memory losses and constant repeated instructions.
- Carrie Fisher tells the story in her memoir and the documentary Wishful Drinking that Reynolds was pregnant with her during production of this film, as well as during Tammy and the Bachelor.
