Biography

Eve Arden was an American actress whose career across film, radio, stage and television spanned nearly six decades. Born in Mill Valley, California, she started making films in 1929 and worked on Broadway from the early 1930s before her first major screen role in the RKO drama Stage Door (1937) opposite Katharine Hepburn. She became known for deadpan comic delivery and witty supporting parts, with credits including At the Circus (1939), Mildred Pierce (1945), which brought an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, The Unfaithful (1947) and Anatomy of a Murder (1959). On television she starred as teacher Connie Brooks in Our Miss Brooks, winning the first Primetime Emmy for lead actress in a drama series, and later appeared in Bewitched. She became familiar to a new generation as Principal McGee in Grease (1978) and returned for Grease 2 (1982), while also taking stage roles in Hello, Dolly! and Auntie Mame.

Behind the award
Arden moved into television later in her career, playing a high school teacher in Our Miss Brooks. She won the first Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for that sardonic but engaging role.
First role
Arden's first film role came in the 1929 backstage musical Song of Love, where she played a wisecracking showgirl who wrecks homes and turns into a rival of Belle Baker, the movie's star singer.
Behind the award
Arden's Miss Brooks proved so popular that the National Education Association made her an honorary member, and in 1952 the Teachers College of Connecticut's Alumni Association gave her an award for humanizing the American teacher.
Own stunts
Arden appeared in the crime film The Forgotten Woman in 1939, then took a role in the Marx Brothers comedy At the Circus that same year, a part that called for her to do acrobatics.
