Plot summary
Eddie Miller cannot shake his hatred of women; it grows worse when he is drawn to someone unattainable or when he sees women with other men. Aware that something is wrong with him, he presses his hand to a hot electric stove and is treated at an emergency room, where a doctor suspects he needs psychological help but is too busy to take it further. Miller then shoots women from a distance with a carbine and sends the police an anonymous letter asking them to stop him. As the shootings continue, a psychologist brings early criminal profiling methods to the search.

- Edward Dmytryk's return to directing came with The Sniper, after he had been named to the Hollywood blacklist and jailed for contempt of Congress. He testified in April 1951 and named fellow leftists; producer Stanley Kramer was the first to hire him again as a director.
- Many of The Sniper's outdoor scenes were shot in San Francisco's Telegraph Hill area and at the Paper Doll Club, but one scene presented as Playland at the Beach was actually filmed at The Pike amusement park in Long Beach.
