Plot summary

Bud Eagle, a young singer-songwriter, comes to Los Angeles on a motorcycle, hoping to make it in music. He meets Vickie, an aspiring dancer, who asks about his gimmick and offers to fill him in on the business. That night he watches her dance on a television variety show, and when the scheduled saxophonist cannot play, Bud takes his place with a ballad and gets a standing ovation. Talent scout Mike McCauley offers him a record deal, and Bud accepts. McCauley moves him into a penthouse, gives him suits, a guitar and a small tape recorder, and hands him a band to record with. Bud's career rises while his doubts about McCauley's methods grow, since the scout pays students at their high schools to promote the records.
