Egon Brecher
Biography
Egon Brecher was an actor and director born in Austria who served as chief director of Vienna's Stadttheater before entering motion pictures. Born in Olomouc, Moravia, he gave up philosophy studies at Heidelberg to become an actor. Through 1910 he acted in German and Austrian provincial theaters, then appeared in Vienna under Josef Jarno's direction until 1921. He also helped found Yiddish theater ventures in Vienna and acted in New York's Yiddish theater in 1906 and 1911 before settling there in 1921 for Broadway. Late in the 1920s he served as leading man and stage director for Eva Le Gallienne's troupe, then went to Hollywood for foreign-language versions of American films. During the mid 1930s he appeared in horror pictures including The Black Cat (1934), Werewolf of London (1935), The Black Room (1935), Mark of the Vampire (1935) and The Devil-Doll (1936), and his Slavic accent brought him noble and villainous roles in espionage films. He died in 1946.
