Harry Carey

Biography

Harry Carey was an American actor who was one of silent film's earliest superstars and often played Western heroes. Born in the Bronx, New York City, he first appeared on screen in 1908 and did his own stunt work. He joined the Biograph Company in 1909 and was signed by D.W. Griffith in 1911, making his Griffith debut in The Sorrowful Shore. His popular outlaw character Cheyenne Harry carried him through a two-decade series, and he starred in John Ford's first feature, Straight Shooting. Carey moved into sound films, taking the title role in Trader Horn, and later became a character actor. He received a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination for playing the Senate president in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and appeared in Air Force (1943) and Red River (1948). He wrote and toured in the play Montana and made his Broadway debut in Heavenly Express in 1940. He died in 1947.
