Roscoe Karns

Biography

Roscoe Karns was an American actor whose screen work stretched from 1915 to 1964 and took in close to 150 films. Born in San Bernardino, he began in a San Diego stock company while still in high school, becoming known for cynical, wise-cracking characters with fast delivery. Silent pictures such as Wings and Beggars of Life came early, but his career took off once sound arrived. His best-known role was Oscar Shapeley, the bus passenger in the Oscar-winning It Happened One Night (1934), followed by Twentieth Century (1934), where he played the boozy press agent Owen O'Malley. He also appeared in His Girl Friday (1940), and in 1937 Paramount paired him with Lynne Overman in two B comedy-mysteries. When film roles grew scarce in the late 1940s, he moved to television, headlining Rocky King, Inside Detective from 1950 to 1954 and playing Walter Shafer in Hennesey from 1959 to 1962. Man's Favorite Sport? (1964) was his last film.
