Plot summary
Gaston and Lily first meet in Venice, where both are living under false titles, and they decide to work together. About a year afterward, in Paris, Gaston lifts a diamond purse from Mariette Colet, who runs a perfume house. She offers a reward for its return, and he brings the purse back under a false name to collect the money. Mariette is taken with him and makes him her private secretary, and he also gets Lily onto the office staff. He has seen Mariette open her private safe and urges her to keep a large sum inside it. Her board chairman, Giron, distrusts the new secretary from the start, and Gaston grows close to Mariette.

- Made before the Production Code was enforced, Trouble in Paradise was refused approval for reissue in 1935 because of its adult themes and sexual innuendo, and was not seen again until 1968; in 1943 Paramount was also rejected when it wanted to make a musical version of the film.
- Trouble in Paradise was the first film that had people talking about "the Lubitsch touch", and it was one of director Ernst Lubitsch's own favorites.
- The director Wes Anderson and the actor Ralph Fiennes both said that Ernst Lubitsch's Trouble in Paradise was an inspiration for the 2014 film The Grand Budapest Hotel.
