Plot summary
Dr. Wilma Tuttle teaches psychology at a college, where her student Bill Perry takes an interest in her that she does not return. He drives her to a seaside cliff and tries to force himself on her; striking out with a piece of metal, she kills him. She hitches a ride home and says nothing about what happened, convinced that no one would believe her account. Warren Ford, a San Francisco attorney who had been Bill's guardian, enters her life, and an inquest rules the death an accident. Detective Ted Dorgan is not satisfied, and the evidence he collects points to Bill being killed before he went over the edge. As Dorgan keeps building the case, Wilma grows increasingly delirious.
