Biography

Lizabeth Scott was an American actress, singer, and model known for a smoky voice and described as film noir's most beautiful face of the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, she landed her first professional job in a national tour of Hellzapoppin and later understudied Sabina in the Broadway production of The Skin of Our Teeth. Her early film credits included The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946), Dead Reckoning (1946), Desert Fury (1947), and Too Late for Tears (1949), and she took the lead in all but three of her 22 films. Her other work included Pitfall (1948), I Walk Alone (1947), and Dark City (1950). She also worked in stage, radio, and television, appearing on TV from the late 1940s into the early 1970s. She died in 2015.

Scott was the first Hollywood star to travel to Britain after World War II ended, arriving in June 1946. Her trip included a promotional tour through the country and the London premiere of Martha Ivers.
First role
Scott's first professional job came in late 1940 at age 19, when she was chosen from hundreds of women for the national tour of Hellzapoppin, billed as Elizabeth Scott.
About the name
Scott derived her stage name from Maxwell Anderson's play Mary of Scotland, initially calling herself Elizabeth Scott before dropping the E.
A role that slipped away
Scott was originally cast as Helen in Bad for Each Other, but when she replaced Patricia Neal, Burt Lancaster had to be replaced by Charlton Heston.
A role that slipped away
Scott took the Kay Lawrence role in I Walk Alone that was intended as Kristine Miller's breakout part, leaving Miller with the second part instead.
Early training
Scott was trained by Hollywood voice teachers Harriet Lee and Lillian Rosedale Goodman, developing a two-octave mezzo-soprano range from A below C to High C.
