Plot summary
Trains carry children left homeless by the war to a transit camp in occupied Germany, where Mrs. Murray and other relief workers house and feed them. Officials then try to identify each child and find any family still living. One boy, Karel, comes from a comfortable Czech home; the Nazis deported his sister and his father, a doctor, and he and his mother were sent to a camp, where they were parted. His mother, Mrs. Malik, goes from camp to camp asking after him. An American engineer named Steve looks after Karel, who cannot recall his name, and calls him Jim.
