Denis O'Dea

Biography

Denis O'Dea was an Irish actor who worked on both stage and screen, coming to acting after a spell in insurance. He was born in Dublin. He was one of the leading performers at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin between 1929 and 1953, and he also acted in plays by the Irish dramatist Teresa Deevy, several of which toured England and New York. That stage career led to film work, among it two John Ford films of the mid-1930s, The Informer (1935) and The Plough and the Stars (1936). He was a police inspector chasing James Mason's IRA man in Carol Reed's Odd Man Out (1947), and he played a police inspector again for Reed in The Fallen Idol (1948). His other films included Alfred Hitchcock's Under Capricorn (1949), Treasure Island (1950), Niagara (1953), Mogambo (1953), The Rising of the Moon (1957) and Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959).
