James Hayter
Biography
James Hayter was a British actor of film and television, born in Lonavala, India, and raised in Scotland. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his West End debut in 1936 in The Composite Man, the same year his screen career began with Sensation. He was best known for playing Friar Tuck in The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men (1952), a part he repeated in A Challenge for Robin Hood (1967), and Samuel Pickwick in The Pickwick Papers (1952), which brought him a BAFTA nomination for Best British Actor. He was Mr Jessop, the bookshop owner, in Oliver! (1968), and later worked in television, including The Forsyte Saga, The Onedin Line and Are You Being Served?, and narrated the British advertisements for Mr Kipling cakes.
