Ian Hunter
Biography
Ian Hunter was a South African-born British actor of stage, film and television. Raised in Cape Town's Kenilworth area by English parents, he moved to London as a teenager and trained under Elsie Fogerty at the Central School before making his stage debut. He then took a part in the British silent film Not for Sale (1924). In 1927 he met Alfred Hitchcock and took roles in The Ring (1927) and Downhill (1927), then went to Hollywood for Syncopation (1929), his first sound film. At Warner Bros. he appeared in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935) and in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) he played King Richard the Lionheart. Later films included The Little Princess (1939), Tower of London (1939) and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941), and he played Sir Richard of the Lea in the television series The Adventures of Robin Hood from 1955. He retired in the 1960s after nearly 100 films.

Early training
After returning from military service, Hunter trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama under Elsie Fogerty, which was then based at Royal Albert Hall. He made his stage debut within two years.
First role
Basil Dean, a British actor and director, was staging Richard Brinsley Sheridan's The School for Scandal at the Knickerbocker Theater, which is what brought Hunter to the United States for the first time. The production closed after a single performance.
A first
Hunter's first sound film was Syncopation (1929) for RKO, made after he stayed in America following a month-long Broadway run in the comedy Olympia.
