Plot summary
Jim Hawkins helps his mother run a country inn on the west coast of England. A sickly lodger, Captain William Bones, hands the boy a treasure map after two strangers serve him the black spot, and when Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey reach the inn they find Bones dead. Trelawney recognizes the map as Captain Flint's and charters the Hispaniola under Captain Smollett, sailing with Livesey as doctor and Jim as cabin boy. Long John Silver, a one-legged innkeeper, gathers a crew and joins the expedition as cook. Smollett is uneasy about the men Silver has hired, the more so because the purpose of the voyage is common knowledge.

- Bobby Driscoll, the production's only American actor, was two years below the minimum age for a British work permit. A court in Beaconsfield fined him, his father and Walt Disney Productions £100 each, barred him from further work, and an appeal court said Disney had "brazenly flouted British law".
- For the 1975 US rerelease Disney wanted a G rating to fit its G-only policy, so the studio cut footage "during a sword fighting scene where several cast members are stabbed or cut with swords and shed blood", despite the MPAA having given the film a PG.
- Robert Newton's Long John Silver, with his exaggerated West Country accent, is credited with popularizing stereotypical pirate speech and the annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day. The characters Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa are based on his Silver.
- Treasure Island was Disney's first completely live-action film, and the first screen version of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel made in color.
- Disney filmed in Britain with RKO's financial help so both studios could draw on frozen earnings from their British ticket sales, money that by law had to be spent on films made in the country.
