Walter Barnes

Biography

Walter Barnes was an American football guard and actor who played four seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, winning two NFL championships, then retired in 1951 and moved into film and television, mainly in Westerns. He was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and had played college football at Louisiana State. Local Philadelphia television appearances led him into acting, and producer Walt Silver helped him into television and film. He appeared in Western series such as Bronco, Gunsmoke, Cheyenne, Bonanza, Have Gun Will Travel and Death Valley Days, and John Wayne helped him win a small part as Charlie the Bartender in Rio Bravo (1959). In the early 1960s he moved to Italy, working in pirate movies, Karl May adaptations and spaghetti Westerns through the decade. After returning in 1969 he appeared in more films and television, including The High Chaparral, and in several of Clint Eastwood's films, among them Bronco Billy (1980).

Barnes began acting after he made several appearances on The Eagles Nest, a Philadelphia local television show, and WCAU television then put him on several local shows.

John Wayne helped Barnes get a small role in Rio Bravo, where Barnes played the part of Charlie the Bartender.

For a part in Tales of the Vikings, a television spin-off of The Vikings, Kirk Douglas put Barnes's name forward. Douglas's production company made the show, and it was shot in Germany.

Barnes became friends with Clint Eastwood while they worked on Rawhide, and that friendship later brought him roles in Eastwood's films, among them Bronco Billy.
A change of course
Barnes tired of small roles and saw opportunities overseas, so in the early 1960s he joined the American actors who relocated to Italy.
