Plot summary
Santer and his gang have their eye on a gold mine on holy Apache land, and Santer pushes the Great Western Railway's construction supervisor to route the new line straight through Apache territory. The young surveyor Charlie, known as Old Shatterhand, finds that the company's stated geological reasons for the shortcut are a pretext and that the railway is breaking its contracts. Winnetou, son of the Apache chief Intschu-tschuna, watches the rails come into his people's land. The missionary Klekih-petra argues against war and arranges a meeting between the tribe and a railway deputation, and Old Shatterhand is chosen to persuade the Apaches that the company will honor the agreements. Santer works to turn the U.S. Army against the tribe so the land will be cleared for him.
