Plot summary
Depletion of the ozone layer has thinned the protection against ultraviolet radiation at high altitudes, and animals living there have turned aggressive. A sheriff barely survives an attack by rats, and the government orders every settlement above 5,000 feet evacuated and quarantined. In Northern California, tour operator Steve Buckner and guide Daniel Santee lead a party of tourists into the wilderness with no way to reach the outside world. Among the hikers are Terry Marsh, Paul Jenson, Prof. Taylor MacGregor, and Shirley Goodwyn with her son John. When a wolf attacks the camp one night, they treat it as an oddity and walk on. They abandon the hike only after finding that animals have raided the food cache dropped for them by helicopter.
