Plot summary

Jonas Candide works as a state executioner in Mississippi in the early twentieth century. He travels the South in 1918 with a portable electric chair, going from one prison to the next, and his young assistant, Jimmy, comes with him. Jonas is a former carnival showman, and he performs the job with the manner of a preacher and a barker, persuading each condemned man to accept his death before the electrocution. His fee is one hundred dollars per execution. Two of his potential victims are Willy Herzallerliebst and his sister Gundred. Gundred is the first woman Jonas has been ordered to execute, and the assignment shakes his sense of purpose.
