Plot summary
Jonathan Corbett has spent years bringing criminals to justice across Texas, and he is ready to retire. At a party given by the railroad tycoon Brokston, whose daughter is about to be married, the talk turns to a seat in the Senate. Brokston offers his political backing if Corbett first tracks down one more wanted man: Cuchillo, a Mexican accused of the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl. Cuchillo is fleeing toward his own country, and Corbett, expecting an easy job, offers to bring him back as a wedding gift. He rides after a quarry far craftier than he looks, and the pursuit carries him over the border.
