Lex Barker
Biography
Lex Barker was an American actor who began on Broadway before serving in World War II. Born in Rye, New York, he signed with RKO and became the tenth official Tarzan in Tarzan's Magic Fountain (1949), playing the role until Tarzan and the She-Devil (1953). He then moved to Europe, where he starred in more than 40 films and had his greatest success in West Germany as Old Shatterhand in adaptations of Karl May's novels, including The Treasure of the Silver Lake (1962), Winnetou 1: Apache Gold (1963), and The Desperado Trail (1965). His other credits included Crossfire (1947), Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948), La Dolce Vita (1960), and Woman Times Seven (1967). He received Bambi Award and Bravo Otto nominations and won a Bambi Award as Best Foreign Actor in 1966.

Barker reached Broadway a single time, in 1938, playing a small part in a brief run of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Big break
In Treasure of Silver Lake (1962), an adaptation of a Karl May novel, Barker took the role of Old Shatterhand. The film proved a huge hit, and through 1968 another 11 movies based on Karl May stories followed.
