Timothy Dalton
Biography
Timothy Dalton is a British actor who began on stage and became the fourth performer to play James Bond in the Eon Productions series. Born in Colwyn Bay, Wales, he got into acting as a teenager, studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and joined the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. His film debut came in 1968 as Philip II in The Lion in Winter, followed by period dramas such as Wuthering Heights (1970), Cromwell (1970), and Mary, Queen of Scots (1971). He then focused on theater with the Royal Shakespeare Company before returning to film in Sextette (1978). Dalton played Bond in The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill (1989), giving a darker, more serious reading of the character. Later screen work includes The Rocketeer (1991), The Informant, Made Men, Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003), Hot Fuzz, and voice roles in Toy Story 3 (2010) and Secret of the Wings (2012).

A role that slipped away
Dalton was first approached to play James Bond in 1968, but turned it down because he felt at 24 or 25 he was too young for the role.
Big break
Dalton got the role of Bond for The Living Daylights only after Pierce Brosnan's offer was withdrawn when Remington Steele was renewed, and Dalton had finished filming Brenda Starr.
First role
Dalton chose acting at 16 after watching a Macbeth production, and he landed a part in the play at The Old Vic. In 1962, still 16, he quit school for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and a National Youth Theatre tour.
Own stunts
Dalton performed most of the stunts in his Bond action scenes himself, which his director John Glen said made him a convincing Bond.
A role that slipped away
In 1994, while filming the miniseries Scarlett, Dalton made an announcement that caught people off guard: he was done playing James Bond. The date was 12 April.
