Plot summary
Late in the Civil War, Jesse James and Frank James fight for the Confederacy alongside their cousins, the Younger brothers. When the war ends, they go back to their farms in Missouri. Union troops hold the town, and the railroad is expanding across the country. Thaddeus Rains, its president, and his organizer Allan Pinkerton pressure the farmers to sell their land; those who refuse are burned out or killed. Zee, Jesse's cousin and childhood friend, has grown into a young woman. Frank finds the railroad does not need their land, but the James and Younger brothers will not sell.
