Trailer

Plot summary

Disease spreads through the kingdom of Enlad and its prince, Arren, disappears. Royal wizard Root reads the dragons now crossing the sky as a sign that the world's balance is failing. Arren wanders the desert, where the archmage Sparrowhawk saves him from wolves. In Hort Town, the boy rescues a girl called Therru from the slaver Hare and is captured himself. Sparrowhawk frees him and brings him to a farm run by his oldest friend Tenar, who is raising Therru. Sparrowhawk hopes to learn what has upset the balance. When he breaks up part of Hare's slave caravan, he angers Lord Cob, the warlock who rules the city.

  • Hayao Miyazaki initially opposed his son Gorō directing Tales from Earthsea, telling producer Toshio Suzuki that Gorō lacked the necessary experience and "probably can't even draw", but Suzuki had already shown him a storyboard Gorō had drawn.
  • Ursula K. Le Guin had turned down Hayao Miyazaki's request to adapt Earthsea into anime some 20 years earlier, because she had not seen his films and associated animation with the Walt Disney Company; after seeing My Neighbor Totoro she came to appreciate his work.
  • Hayao Miyazaki never once looked at his son Gorō's storyboard for the film and stayed on non-speaking terms with him for the duration of the project, though he did acknowledge his son's work at its first preview.
  • SPOILERThe film's opening, in which Prince Arren kills his father the king — a drastic departure from Ursula K. Le Guin's novel — was producer Toshio Suzuki's idea.
  • Tales from Earthsea became the first and only animated film released under Disney's name to receive a PG-13 rating, which the MPAA gave it for some violent images.
