Plot summary

In 1862 in the New Mexico Territory, Major Jim Colton commands Fort Buchanan and has good relations with Cochise, chief of the Chiricahua Apaches. Government agent Neil Baylor arrives with his scout Mescal Jack and a plan that breaches existing treaties: the Apaches are to be resettled on the San Carlos Reservation. When Geronimo, who leads the rival Mogollon Apaches, strikes a Tucson stagecoach and kills women and children aboard, Baylor threatens to send the Chiricahuas to San Carlos as well. Cochise calls a council of Apache elders, which votes to banish Geronimo and to have him surrender one of his captives, the schoolteacher Mary Kearny.
