Biography

Stephen McNally was an American actor best remembered for Westerns and action pictures, whose dark features often placed him as hard-hearted characters, criminals and villains. Born in New York City as Horace McNally, he studied law at Fordham University and worked as a lawyer in the late 1930s before turning to acting. His stage work began under his own name, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer signed him in 1942 for supporting roles; he stayed there until 1946. He later took the name Stephen McNally and joined Warner Bros, and in 1948 he took the role of the villain Locky McCormick in Johnny Belinda, a part he had played on Broadway in 1940 as Dr. Richardson. His movies included Criss Cross (1949), Winchester '73 (1950), No Way Out (1950), Split Second (1953) and Violent Saturday (1955). He also appeared in television series such as Crossroads, The Outer Limits, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke and The Rockford Files.

Stephen McNally studied law at Fordham University School of Law and worked as an attorney in the late 1930s, then went after his passion for acting.
First role
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer signed McNally in 1942 and cast him in supporting roles. In the Laurel and Hardy comedy Air Raid Wardens, released in 1943, he played a newspaper editor, his first juvenile lead.
