Plot summary
Major Marquis Warren, a bounty hunter and a Union Army veteran, rides toward Red Rock in Wyoming Territory with three bounty corpses when his horse gives out and a blizzard closes in. He flags down a stagecoach driven by O.B. Jackson. Inside, the bounty hunter John Ruth is handcuffed to his prisoner, Daisy Domergue, whom he means to see hanged in Red Rock. Chris Mannix, who says he is the town's new sheriff, is allowed aboard as well. The group takes shelter from the storm at Minnie's Haberdashery. A Mexican named Bob claims he is tending the haberdashery while Minnie and her husband are away. Hangman Oswaldo Mobray, cowboy Joe Gage and Confederate general Sanford Smithers are already lodged there. Ruth, wary, disarms everyone except Warren.

- Kurt Russell's character smashes not a prop but an antique 1870s Martin guitar on loan from the Martin Guitar Museum. Sound mixer Mark Ulano said the instrument was supposed to be swapped for a copy, but nobody told Russell, and everyone on set was freaked out.
- Quentin Tarantino shelved The Hateful Eight after the script leaked in January 2014 and decided to publish it as a novel instead, but he directed a live reading of the script in Los Angeles in April 2014 and then resumed the film.
- Viggo Mortensen passed on a role in The Hateful Eight because of scheduling conflicts, and Jennifer Lawrence declined the part of Daisy Domergue due to her commitments to Joy and The Hunger Games; she later said she regretted turning it down.

- Quentin Tarantino confirmed that The Hateful Eight uses three unused tracks from Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for The Thing (1982) - Eternity, Bestiality and Despair - as Morricone was pressed for time while creating the score.
- The Hateful Eight was the widest release in 70 mm film since Far and Away in 1992, a mark that stood until Dunkirk came out two years later.
