Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Death Proof (2007)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Robert Rodriguez gave the film its title. Tarantino started to tell him the story and said it had a death-proof car in it; Rodriguez replied, "You have to call it Death Proof. I helped title the movie, but that's it."
- Tarantino attempted to cast John Travolta, Denzel Washington, Willem Dafoe, John Malkovich, Mickey Rourke, Ron Perlman, Bruce Willis, Kal Penn and Sylvester Stallone in Death Proof, but none of them were able to work on it because of prior commitments.
- Stuntwoman Zoë Bell, who had been Uma Thurman's stunt double on Kill Bill, so stunned Tarantino that he wrote her the leading female role. It was her first on-screen acting, which Bell initially thought was going to be a cameo role.
- Tarantino remembers realizing he could not do a straight slasher film because, women-in-prison films aside, no other genre is quite as rigid. Instead he took the structure of a slasher film and made a version that is "fucked up and disjointed", using that structure against the audience.
- The film was intentionally damaged to look like the 1970s exploitation prints that were shipped around from theater to theater and usually ended up in bad shape. At the start, the title Quentin Tarantino's Thunder Bolt shows for a split second before being abruptly replaced by an insert reading Death Proof.
- At a 2012 director's roundtable Tarantino said Death Proof "has got to be the worst movie I ever made", adding that for a left-handed movie it was not so bad, and that if that is the worst he ever gets, he is good.
