Eli Roth
Biography
Eli Roth is an American director, producer, screenwriter and actor whose work is most often found in horror, particularly the graphic splatter variety. He grew up in Newton, Massachusetts, began making short films as a boy, and studied at New York University, where a student film earned a Student Academy Award. His first feature, Cabin Fever (2003), became a hit for Lionsgate and established him in the genre, and Hostel (2005) followed; journalists eventually grouped him with a circle of filmmakers dubbed the Splat Pack. As an actor he is best known for playing Donny Donowitz in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009), which brought him Critics' Choice and Screen Actors Guild awards as part of the ensemble. He also appeared in Death Proof (2007) and Piranha 3D (2010), and directed films outside the genre, among them Knock Knock (2015) and Death Wish (2018).

Early training
While attending NYU film school, Roth wrote and directed the student film Restaurant Dogs, a homage to Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. In 1995 it was nominated for a Student Academy Award and won its division.
A role that slipped away
Roth was announced in 2015 as director of an adaptation of a best-selling shark novel that came to be called The Meg. The next year, word came that he had exited the project over creative differences.
First role
Billed as a "Blood and Guts Expert", Roth provided an audio commentary for Troma's 1997 DVD release of Blood Sucking Freaks. He did this four years before he directed his first film.
