Plot summary
Dorothy Gale lives in a Kansas trailer park with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, and she works at the family diner while dreaming of a career as a singer. When she learns the Muppets need a backup singer, she records a demo CD. A tornado then tears through the park, and Dorothy goes back for Toto, her pet prawn, and the two are carried off to Oz. She lands in Munchkinland, where the Munchkins tell her the land's ruler, the Wizard, can grant her wish, and the Good Witch of the North gives her a pair of silver slippers. On the yellow brick road she meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Thing and a Cowardly Lion, who also want the Wizard's help.

- The Muppets' Wizard of Oz was the final Muppets project produced by the Jim Henson Company, ending the company's involvement with the characters after more than fifty years of ownership, following Disney's 2004 acquisition of the franchise.
- Before Ashanti won the role of Dorothy Gale in The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, both Hilary Duff and Jessica Simpson had auditioned to play her.
- The film was the first Muppets production without veteran performer Jerry Nelson, who retired from physical performing in 2004; his five characters, including Floyd Pepper and Statler, were split among other puppeteers, and it also marked Eric Jacobson's feature-film debut performing Sam Eagle, a role originated by Frank Oz.
