Plot summary
Pauline Kael was born in California in 1919 and published her first film review in 1953; The New Yorker took her on in 1968. She watched movies as an ordinary member of the audience and wrote about them with strong opinions. Other critics followed her lead, while directors whose work she disliked did not forgive her. She dismissed pictures now considered classics and praised others such as Bonnie and Clyde. In her reviews and media appearances she fought the sexism women met in the movie industry and in criticism. Her story is told through her published essays, her letters and recorded interviews, with more than thirty participants adding recollections and clips from the films she reviewed.
