Biography

Peter Sallis was an English actor who came to prominence in British film and television and was best known for voicing Wallace in the Wallace and Gromit films and for playing Norman Clegg in Last of the Summer Wine. Born in Twickenham, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after winning a Korda scholarship and made his first professional London stage appearance in 1946. His film credits included Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970), The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) and Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960). He played Clegg in every episode of Last of the Summer Wine, from 1973 until 2010. He voiced Wallace in the award-winning The Wrong Trousers (1993) and A Close Shave (1995), and in Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), for which he won an Annie Award.

A role that slipped away
In 1983 Sallis was set to appear as Striker in the Doctor Who serial Enlightenment, but he pulled out and Keith Barron took the part instead.
A change of course
Sallis became a wireless mechanic and then taught radio procedures at RAF Cranwell, and for that he won a Korda Scholarship.
