Peter Copley

Biography

Peter Copley was an English actor who worked in television, film and the theater. Born in Bushey, Hertfordshire, he trained at the Old Vic School after deciding against joining the Royal Navy, and began his stage career in 1932. His first film appearance came in 1934, and he went on to play characters that ranged from villainous to meek and mild. On stage he appeared in Cyrano de Bergerac at London's New Theatre in 1946 and in the comedy The Happy Family at the Duchess Theatre in the West End in 1951. His many television credits included The Avengers, The Forsyte Saga, Doctor Who and One Foot in the Grave. He kept acting into his nineties, and in 2001 the University of the West of England awarded him an honorary Master of Arts degree. He died in 2008.
