Geraldine McEwan

Geraldine McEwan was an English actress whose career spanned theater, television and film. Born in Old Windsor, she began as an assistant stage manager at the Theatre Royal and first appeared on its stage in 1946. After her West End debut in 1951, she played classical roles at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, including Olivia in Twelfth Night, Ophelia in Hamlet and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. She later joined the National Theatre Company and broadened her range into serious drama. A five-time Olivier Award nominee, she won two Evening Standard Best Actress awards, for The Rivals and The Way of the World, and received a Tony nomination for The Chairs. On television she won a BAFTA for Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit and starred as Miss Marple in Marple. Her film work included Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) and The Magdalene Sisters (2002).
