Plot summary
Arthur Seaton is a machinist at a bicycle factory in Nottingham, and he has no intention of settling into the domestic routine he sees around him, his parents included. He has little patience for his boss or for anyone in authority, and he spends his wages at the weekend drinking. He is having an affair with Brenda, whose husband Jack works alongside him at the factory and whose evening shifts leave her free. Arthur also begins a more traditional courtship of Doreen, a single woman closer to his age who lives with her mother and wants to be married. Doreen puts off his sexual advances, and he goes on seeing Brenda.

- After viewing the film, Ian Fleming sold the rights to the James Bond series to its executive producer Harry Saltzman, who with Albert R. Broccoli co-produced every Bond film from Dr. No (1962) to The Man with the Golden Gun (1974).
- The Smiths drew on the film twice for their 1986 album The Queen Is Dead: Aunt Ada's line 'Them was rotten days' is etched in the run-out groove, and a line of Doreen's inspired 'There Is a Light That Never Goes Out'. Morrissey has called it one of his favorites.
- Arctic Monkeys took the title of their 2006 debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, from a monologue Arthur delivers in the film.
