Biography

Yootha Joyce was a British actress who died in 1980, best known as Mildred Roper in two hit sitcoms. Born in Wandsworth, London, she trained at RADA and then joined Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, where she appeared in Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be and in plays including The Hostage and The Dutch Courtesan. Her first television appearance came in 1962 in Brothers in Law, and her first film was Sparrows Can't Sing (1963). Supporting parts followed in The Pumpkin Eater (1964), Fanatic (1965), A Man for All Seasons (1966), Our Mother's House (1967) and Charlie Bubbles (1968), along with a hospital matron in Frankenstein: The True Story (1973). Starring roles arrived in 1973 with Man About the House, which ran until 1976. A spin-off, George and Mildred, followed, shown between 1976 and 1979. She won Best Actress at the 1976 Sun Awards and appeared in the George and Mildred feature film (1980).

Early training
Joyce left RADA in early 1946 because she found the school unduly strict and unencouraging. Before that, she had returned to RADA in September 1945 and adopted the stage name Yootha Joyce.
Beyond film
Joyce came to prominence in the musical Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be, playing three roles; it transferred to the Garrick Theatre in the West End and ran for 886 performances.
