Plot summary
Charlie Bubbles came up from the working class of Manchester and made his name as a writer in London, rich and famous sooner than most. Success has left his feelings dulled, and he sees little of the family he left behind in Manchester. He keeps a secretary, Eliza, and travels in a gold Rolls-Royce convertible. When Lottie, the wife he is separated from, telephones about a football match he had agreed to take their son Jack to, Charlie sets out from London for Manchester with Eliza beside him. The next day he drives to the farm outside the city where Lottie and Jack live, a place he comes to rarely, and father and son go together to the match, watching from a private box at Old Trafford and eating hotdogs.
