Plot summary
Peter Hadley is finishing medical school at UCLA, where his father grades his final exam and fails him. Disillusioned, he goes home with Bogart, a jazz singer he has just met, and the next morning rides along when she sets out on a drive. He wakes in Humboldt County, in the redwoods of northern California, at the home of the family that took her in: Jack and Rosie, their son Max, and Max's daughter Charity. They grow marijuana, and federal agents patrol the area. Bogart dislikes the farming life and soon leaves without a word, stranding Peter with no ride to the bus, which comes once a day. Max puts him to work on the crop while Peter weighs whether to call his father for help.
