Noel Purcell

Biography

Noel Purcell was an Irish actor who worked in film and television. Born in Dublin, he trained in the classics there and first appeared at the Gaiety Theatre at 12, then traveled around Ireland in vaudeville with Jimmy O'Dea before entering films in 1934. His parts ranged from a member of Ahab's crew in Moby Dick (1956) and William McCoy in Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) to Dan O'Flaherty in The Rising of the Moon (1957). His two films for John Huston were The List of Adrian Messenger (1963), in which he played a gamekeeper, and The Mackintosh Man (1973), where he was a barman. On television he appeared repeatedly in The Buccaneers from 1955, and he narrated Seven Wonders of Ireland (1959). He also sang, and performed The Dublin Saunter, written for him by Leo Maguire, for many years, and in 1984 Dublin gave him the Freedom of the City. He died in 1985.

Songwriter Leo Maguire wrote "The Dublin Saunter" for Purcell shortly after World War II, and Purcell performed it live for many years before recording it for the Glenside label.
