Deryck Guyler
Biography
Deryck Guyler was an English actor who became a familiar voice on British radio and a fixture of television sitcoms. Born in Wallasey, he joined the Liverpool Repertory Theatre in the 1930s and later the BBC's Drama and Repertory company in 1942. From 1946 he was a regular on the radio series It's That Man Again, and he went on to play the time traveler in Journey into Space, the title role in Inspector Scott Investigates, and Number One in The Men from the Ministry. His film work included the Police Sergeant in A Hard Day's Night (1964) and the art professor in Ferry Cross the Mersey, and he played a surgeon in Carry On Doctor (1967). On television he was Constable Turnbull in Sykes and the caretaker Norman Potter in Please Sir! He also performed a washboard act and narrated the documentary Fred Dibnah, Steeplejack.

A first
From 1946 Guyler was a regular on the radio series It's That Man Again. He said his character 'Frisby Dike' was the first time radio listeners heard a genuine Liverpudlian accent.
Own stunts
Guyler had loved playing the washboard since his school days and brought his washboard novelty act to many television light entertainment shows. On the BBC's Children in Need show on 26 November 1982, he played washboard alongside astronomer Patrick Moore on xylophone.
Beyond film
Shakin' Stevens, a long-time fan of Guyler, had him play washboard in 1990. Guyler contributed the washboard to three tracks on an album by Stevens.
