Plot summary
At the McKenzie camp in northern Scotland, Kapitän zur See Willi Schlüter, who commanded a U-boat in the Kriegsmarine, refuses to let Major Perry punish his men, and when the guards use force the prisoners drive them back with sticks and stones. Operational control passes to Captain Jack Connor, an Irishman on loan from the Royal Ulster Rifles to Army Intelligence and a crime reporter in peacetime, sent by General Kerr to learn what lies behind the uprisings. The camp is split between Schlüter's submariners and the Luftwaffe airmen, who question his motives and see little point in escape. Schlüter pushes work on a tunnel nearing completion, and Connor, certain it exists, taunts him about it.
