John Huston
Biography
John Huston was a filmmaker and actor who was American and Irish, and he wrote many of the screenplays for the films he directed. Born in Nevada, Missouri, in 1906, he was the son of actor Walter Huston and first worked as a Hollywood screenwriter, earning Academy Award nominations before his directorial debut, The Maltese Falcon (1941), became a critical and commercial hit. He went on to direct acclaimed films including The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), The Misfits (1961), and Prizzi's Honor (1985), winning Oscars for directing and adapted screenplay for Sierra Madre. He received 14 Academy Award nominations in all. As an actor, he was nominated for an Oscar for The Cardinal (1963) and a Golden Globe for Chinatown (1974), and he appeared in Casino Royale (1967) and voiced Gandalf in The Hobbit (1977) and in The Return of the King (1980). He died in 1987.
