Plot summary
Baron José Gruda, the king's envoy, is bound for Cobra to put down a rebellion when his frigate is taken by Captain Vallo, the Crimson Pirate. The two strike a bargain: Vallo keeps the ship and frees the baron and his men, and in return he will hunt down the rebel leader El Libre for a reward. Vallo and his lieutenant Ojo sail to Cobra and fall in with the rebels, among them Pablo Murphy and El Libre's daughter Consuelo. Vallo also means to sell the ship's guns and powder to the rebels and then tell the baron where El Libre can be found, taking a profit on both sides.
