Plot summary
Caroline Trewella teaches gymnastics and travels to her family's house in Cornwall for a holiday, where she encounters Miranda, a distant mermaid relative who is her exact double. The two arrange to exchange lives for a while, with Caroline leaving on a cycling holiday with a friend. To explain why Miranda has a fish tail rather than legs, Caroline pretends to have had an accident and to need a wheelchair for several weeks. Nurse Carey, who knows what Miranda is, is engaged to look after her. Caroline is engaged to Ronald Baker, and when he appears Miranda dislikes him and resolves to find her a better match. She flirts with Jeff Saunders and Colonel Barclay Sutton, two eligible bachelors, while Ronald watches.
