Plot summary
In "The Majesty of the Law", Inspector Dillon walks the countryside to arrest his old friend Dan O'Flaherty for striking Phelim O'Feeney, and the poitín maker Mickey J. falls in with him; the village takes O'Flaherty's side. In "A Minute's Wait", a train stops at Dunfaill station in County Kerry, where the porter Paddy Morrisey calls a minute's wait and the passengers crowd into the bar; a prize-winning goat takes the first class compartment of an English colonel and his wife, and a stranded hurling team keeps the train waiting. In "1921", Sean Curran awaits execution in Galway prison while nuns parade outside chanting the rosary, and the warden admits two visitors, one claiming to be Curran's sister.
